Boondock Saints Rosary

During the summer of 2008, I made this piece for a friend of mine who was a particular fan of the 1999 Troy Duffy thriller "The Boondock Saints".  The two main protagonists of the film (or antagonists, depending on your outlook) carried matching Rosary necklaces with distinctive beveled Celtic-style crosses.  There are not too many direct clear shots of these Rosary necklaces in the film, but going on what I could see and using the actor's hands and other objects for scale, I set out to re-create one of the iconic props.

I cut the cross out of a piece of dense pine, and beveled the oblique sides with a file and a chisel.  The ring is a fender washer I set down into the surface of the cross.  I left the surface somewhat rough to simulate age and a hard life, and after finishing with a few thick coats of varnish, wore the exposed hard edges down some more.  The necklace is made up of wood and metal beads, and made short by request to be easier for casual wear.

I enjoy re-creating iconic objects or movie props, and this was a fun and satisfying project.
